PATCHES & UPDATES: WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition
WolfQuest Saga in Public Beta!
The WolfQuest Saga is now in public beta on Steam! See instructions at bottom of this post for instructions on how to switch to the public beta branch. If you'd rather wait until the full release, that's fine, it won't be too long! (11/18/2024)
Three New Things in Public Beta 1.1.1g
We've got a new public beta out on Steam and, along with the usual variety of bugfixes and minor improvements, it has three notable new things. (2/1/2024)
v1.1.1 in Public Beta with Persistent Packs
The next game update, v1.1.1, is now in public beta on Steam! This features the new Persistent Pack feature! Rival packs now have lives of their own: growing, shrinking, and changing over the course of years. Most if this is invisible to players, but should make the game feel more realistic. 12/7/2023
v1.1.0 Released!
We've released the next big game update, where you can raise pups on Amethyst Mountain, hunt pronghorn, customized your territory hex colors, and much more! 6/272023
Public Beta for v1.1.0
The next big update of the game is now in public beta on Steam, for those interested in trying it! We’ve had a dedicated group of private beta testers hammering on it for awhile now, so it’s in good shape but undoubtedly there are still some things that need fixing and tweaking. (6/14/2023)
Public Beta for v1.0.8l
Help test out the new injury system in beta on Steam. (5/4/2022)

Life and Death and Beavers (v1.0.7 Released!)
Today we are releasing the next big update of WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, with three new features — Age Perks, Ironwolf, and Beavers — plus dozens of smaller improvements and bugfixes.(5/4/2021)
Update 1.0.7...Almost Ready!
We are getting close to releasing the next game update v1.0.7, featuring Age Perks, Ironwolf, and Beavers! But we hit a few snags so it’s not quite ready yet and will remain in public beta for a few more days. In the meantime, enjoy this beaver, whose day is also not going as planned. (4/29/2021)

WOLVES
Saga: Young Hunters
Today we're looking at a very important part of the upcoming WolfQuest Saga* -- when your pups of the year learn to hunt! (3/21/2024)
Saga Smorgasbord
The upcoming WolfQuest Saga* has some big new features -- pups growing up, learning to hunt, and eventually dispersing -- but we're adding some smaller things as well, including NPC wolf injuries and having young pups be wary of water when they first encounter a crossing. (5/30/2024)
The Very VERY Hungry Pups
The most dangerous time in the life of a wolf pup begins just after the current WolfQuest game ends -- it's called "The Period of Rapid Growth," when pup food intake nearly doubles and they grow by more than 50% in a six-week period. (5/16/2024)
Saga: Hanging With the Yearlings
Lately we've been working on the yearlings -- the pups who survived their first year of life and now are helping raise the new pups of the year (whenever they're not playing or getting distracted). 1/25/2024
Dispersing Differences
We are adding sex-based odds for dispersing. Now males are more likely to disperse, and females are more likely to stay with their pack -- but to counterbalance the dispersal shift, more females in each rival pack are more likely to be interested in courtship. (1/11/2024)
Saga Social Interactions
Tommi has been working on new social interactions within the player's pack. 12/21/2023
Persistent Packs
Our new persistent packs system is shaping up. (10/12/2023)
They Grow Up So Fast
For the Saga, pups will age in four stages. (11/16/2023)
Sizing Up (and Down)
You can now set your wolf's body size freely! (7/11/2023)
The Pup Chase
It's one we've had on the list for a long time: a chase, with coordinated action between two pups. One pup playbows to invite the other to chase it, then runs off hoping that the invitation will be accepted. (6/8/2023)
More Ways to Express Yourself
So we've now got 15 new howls added to the game -- and we've revised the Howl section of the wolf customization panel so all 39 howls can be selected as either primary or secondary howls (or both!). 5/25/2023
Yellowstone Wolf Coat DLC!
The new Yellowstone Wolf Pack DLC is now available for purchase! It features 15 beautiful new coats modeled after actual Yellowstone wolves! (3/4/2021)
Faces and Places
Five wolf black coat variations to ensure more variety in the dispersals that you encounter when looking for a mate. Asked players for place name suggestions for the bigger Slough Creek map. (1/21/2021)

ANIMALS
Small Prey for Small Wolves
We've been building a pup XP system, most significantly when the pups are learning how to hunt elk late in their first year. But pups are learning and gaining experience every month as they grow. So we added small prey around the homesite, such as toads and voles. (4/25/2024)
The Wolverines of Hellroaring Mountain
Wolverines will be found on the upcoming Hellroaring Mountain DLC map! (3/7/2024)
Dog Days
We are adding some mutts to the the feral dog packs roaming Lost River. We've also been working on more variations of elk antlers. (8/10/2023)
New AI System for the Saga
The new AI system, which Tommi has been working on for quite awhile, is in in good shape now, so let's take a look at it. (4/13/2023)
Pronking Pronghorn
We've got a new animal joining the WolfQuest gang: pronghorn! (3/2/2023)
Howls & Growls: An Audio Outing
Yesterday Susan and I traveled to the Wildlife Science Center in Stacy, Minnesota to try to capture a variety of vocalizations by wolves and other animals. While we have quite a good number of these sound effects in the game, they still get repetitive, so more is always better. Our host was Megan Callahan-Beckel, Animal Care Coordinator, who took us around the facility and used various methods to prompt the animals to howl, growl, snarl, whimper, and whine. (11/18/2022)
Beavers (Beeaaverrrss)
Beavers are coming along. It turns out they are more complicated than one might expect. First of all, they are semi-aquatic so their movement patterns and behaviors are different than all the other WolfQuest animals — as is how wolves hunt them. We are drawing on recent discoveries by the Voyageurs Wolf Project about wolf predation on beavers, which means a new hunting mode: ambush! As always, Tommi is crafting the balance of naturalistic behavior and fun gameplay. (4/1/2021)
Is This Bugging You?
We got a suggestion from a player that it would be cool to add a special animation for the way elk sometimes pull their heads up and back when they are alarmed and fleeing wolves. We were perplexed because this is already included in the game. But no, it turns out that this animation stopped working sometime ago and no one had caught that. So, it’s back in the game now… (2/25/2021)

GAMEPLAY
Shaping Up the Saga
The WolfQuest Saga* has been in beta-testing for five months now -- plenty of bugs to find and fix, but we're also making hundreds of improvements too. Many of these improvements are suggested by our beta testers, so in today's devblog I'd like to look at a few of those. (11/06/2024)
Territory Tweaks in the Saga
Territory is an essential part of a wolf's life. The territory system in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition has worked pretty well over the last five years, but as we have been playtesting the upcoming Saga*, we decided to tweak a few things.(10/10/2024)
Problem-Solving in the Saga
With such a big expansion and revision as the WolfQuest Saga*, it's inevitable that we'll find problems --with the gameplay, with the arc of your wolf's life, with the visuals. So there's always a couple problems that need to be solved. Today we'll look at a few of those. (9/25/2024)
Quests in the Saga
Two new quests in the Saga: Growing Pups, which takes you through the period of rapid pup growth in late summer, and then Young Hunters, when you help your pups learn how to hunt elk over the fall and winter. (9/11/2024)
Switching Things Up in the Saga
One goal for the upcoming WolfQuest Saga* is to add more variety to the gameplay. We can't really change up that core gameplay, but the new quests coming in the Saga will certainly help. (8/22/2024)
Dispersals in the Saga
Today's devblog looks at an important part of the upcoming WolfQuest Saga* -- how your pups will disperse when they grow up. (7/25/2024)
A New IK System
One of our challenging tasks in the development of the Anniversary Edition was creating an IK system for wolves, so they would interact more naturally with their environment — both the ground and other objects such as elk who were fleeing for their lives from the wolves.(6/27/2024)
Hex Invaders
Rival packs and territorial conflicts get more interesting. (6/13/2024)
Saga Switchbacks
Working on a big project like the Saga* sometimes feels like climbing a mountain. And sometimes when you're climbing a mountain, the path has some switchbacks, where you have to turn and go back and forth rather than progressing directly up to the summit. (9/28/2023)
Saga Status Report
We are making good progress with the WolfQuest Saga -- which will have pups learning to hunt, growing into adulthood, and dispersing to try to find or form a pack of their own. (8/24/2023)
Amethyst Quests and Territory Hexes
In the next game update (coming somewhat soon), you'll be able to play the entire (current) sequence of quests in all maps. You can start a new game in Amethyst -- and stay there through the winter and into the next year, choosing and raising your pups. And in Slough Creek, you can start a new game and find a mate there. This of course requires homesites in Amethyst, so we've created 21 dens and nearly 30 rendezvous sites there. (5/11/2023)
Adding Abodes on Amethyst Mountain
New dens on Amethyst Mountain map for the upcoming complete quest cycle on every map. (9/22/2022)
Stumble and Tumble
Elk may stumble, giving you an easier meal. Wolf bio now allows more text -- about 250-300 words and you can now edit the bio during gameplay in Pack Info. (5/26/2022)
This n' That
This devblog looks at a few common questions about the upcoming injuries system, and gives a sneak peek at one of the new DLC wolf coats coming soon. (4/21/2022)

Courtship and Territory Improvements
What the title says. (2/18/2022)
Howl and Response
Dispersal wolves now howl in response to player howl. (1/13/2022)
Iconic Achievements
Achievement icons by WolfQuest moderator and beta tester Jessie Clarey — aka Loach on Discord and Steam Today’s video is a time-lapse of the Lupine Legend achievement (Finish Slough Creek as an Ironwolf), showing all the talent and artistry that goes into each of the fifty icons that she has been creating (8/5/2021)
Better Late Than Never
Cloud saves for user files, a wagon trail in Slough Creek, in-game message notifications, each stranger pack's home hex, which you can degrade but cannot claim, is now marked with a dot. (7/15/2021)
Tags, Time, and Territories
When creating a game, the host can now select several tags from a pulldown list that help describe their game. A new Sleep Mode for multiplayer. Three more territory configurations. (7/8/2021)
Achievements: Share Your Ideas!
Achievements are one of the remaining features still to be added to WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, and we will be focusing on them soon. We’ve been working on our plans for achievements, on and off, for quite awhile. Share your ideas! (5/20/2021)
Age Perks
Instead of a standard XP system, we designed Age Perks to give players the option to experience the life of a wolf in a more naturalistic way. You start as a two year old wolf, bursting with vim and vigor, and can now progress through the years to become an elder wolf, gaining wisdom and insight into the ways of the world. The Age Perks system offers a selection of physical, clout, and wisdom bonuses for each year of your wolf's life.(4/15/2021)
Ironwolf
Ironwolf is a new hardcore mode for players who really want to live the life of a wild wolf, always one false move or unlucky kick away from death. As an ironwolf, you only live once! (4/8/2021)
loboLoco's Letdowns
We get lots of player requests and suggestions for things to add to WolfQuest. Many are great ideas and often match items on our own extensive wishlist. But we don’t add everything to our list, and for today’s devblog, we thought players might be interested to hear about a few popular requests that won’t be coming soon (or at all) and some of our reasons why. (2/11/2021)
The Big Picture
Master plan for WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, from what’s already available in the Amethyst Mountain episode, to what’s currently in development in Slough Creek episode, to our future expansion plans with the Tower Fall episode. (9/10/20)

Hellroaring Along
Progress on the upcoming Hellroaring Mountain DLC map, including the rivers and a sneak peek at the new achievement icons and dreams.(4/4/2024)
Homesteading Hellroaring Mountain
The upcoming Hellroaring Mountain DLC map is shaping up nicely! Like every game map, it needs a lot of potential den sites. (2/22/2024)
Hellroaring Rocks!
I've been working on the upcoming Hellroaring Mountain DLC map. Today we take a look at the challenges of creating a landscape dense with granite outcrops at high elevations and a metamorphic schist river canyon. Yes, it's time for another geology-mapmaking devblog! (10/26/2023)
Eight Enjoyable Enhancements from the Backlog
We’ve had time to dig into our backlog (a long list of minor improvements and enhancements) and get a few things done. Today's video shows eight of them that we think you will find enjoy. (3/30/2023)
https://youtu.be/JaSng6ffVL4
Amethyst Rocks!

Designing Dens in Lost River
Raising pups will be a main attraction of the new, expanded Lost River DLC map, which we expect to release later this year. Those young pups require a protected place in their first two months, of course, and so I've been designing and building dens for them all over the new map. Today's video shows two of them in progress -- both using new den meshes, and one nestled in the roots of a new Red Maple tree. (7/21/2022)
Busy as Beavers in Lost River
I've been focused on Lost River -- the upcoming, greatly expanded version of Lost River which we will release later this year as DLC. There's plenty to do on it -- setting up all the seasons, refining the terrain and points of interest, creating an interesting variety of dens, beaver artifacts, and working with artists on new....features....in Lost River. (6/30/2022)
Lost River: On the Road Again
Lost River! Refining the forest patterns on the map using some algorithms and Perlin noise patterns. (6/9/2022)

Improvements to the natural environment, adding more (and better) tree stumps in the woods and more ground clutter in the form of dead logs. New bushes, snowberry and huckleberry bushes, and Indian paintbrush flower.
Tommi has refactored and overhauled the NPC navigation, pathfinding, and obstacle avoidance systems, making those smarter and more robust. (10/15/2021)
Another Dam Video
Actually, this is our first dam video, but it may not be our last! Beavers are coming soon to WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition! Today’s devblog looks at how we are modifying the Slough Creek environment to match what beavers really do in the real world. (3/28/2021)

MUSIC & ART
Achievements in the Saga
Eighteen new achievements for the Saga! Longtime WolfQuest player/beta tester/moderator Loach (Jessie Clarey-Berthiaume) has created all of the achievement icons already in the game, and she created the icons for half of these new achievements. Rolin Serna (who created the beautiful splash image that you see when you launch the game) created the other nine new icons. Each one is exquisite.(10/24/2024)
Buzza's Banjo Pups for the Saga
In the upcoming WolfQuest Saga,* pups will keep growing -- changing from cute little furballs into enthusiastic, awkward teenagers who must plunge in and learn how to hunt the hard way. These older pups needed some new music tracks that captured their gangly charm. (7/11/2024)
