People ask us for recommendations for computers that will run WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition with high graphics settings. Here are some basic things to think about.

Desktop vs. Laptop

In general, desktops are cheaper and better for gaming than laptops . Desktops are easier to upgrade if someday you want to, for example, get a new and better graphics card. Many laptops do not allow you to change the graphics card or make other changes easily. But if you need to be portable, then a laptop is the way to go, of course.

PC vs. Mac

We love Macs! But for gaming, Windows computers give you a lot more bang for your buck, both due to cost differences between them, and the ways that Windows is better optimized to run 3D games. Yes, you can play games on higher end Macs but, if you are on a budget, PCs are the way to go for games.

Update: The new Apple Silicon Macs are much more powerful than previous Macs, and generally can run WolfQuest:AE at mid-level graphics quality, though for any kind of gaming on a laptop, we recommend getting a model with a built-in fan. (The cheaper M1 MacBooks do not have one and so the graphics are throttled down to prevent overheating.)

Get a Good, DEDICATED Graphics Card

The most important thing to consider when you are purchasing a computer for 3D games is the graphics card. If you have a good graphics card, then it is likely that the rest of the computer will be able to handle running games like WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition. The first important thing is to have a dedicated graphics card, rather than the integrated graphics that are built into any Windows computer.

You can search this page to see the score for various graphics card: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php. To run WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition at maximum graphics quality with a solid 60fps, look for a graphics card with a score of at least 11,000. (Graphics card with lower scores will still run the game nicely, but at lower quality levels.)

We also advise you to go to your local computer store rather than buying online, and to ask an employee what computer will fit your needs. Avoid office supply stores like Staples or OfficeMax, as they largely carry computers designed for light business work rather than 3D gaming. Here are a few questions to ask when looking for a computer to purchase:

  • What is your budget?
  • What other games do you want to play and what are their requirements?
  • What is the graphics card and will I be able to upgrade it later?
  • What are the reviews/ratings for the computer I am considering. There are lots of online review sites!
